Definition of Business Attire

You've probably seen advertisements, party invitations or work handbooks that say business attire is required. But what exactly does that mean? Read on to learn about all the levels of proper business attire.

  1. Traditional or Formal Business Attire

    • Formal business attire includes business suits and dress shirts for both men and women. Dress shoes are required, and men should wear ties when formal business attire is requested.

    General Business Attire

    • General business attire is only slightly less formal than formal business attire and tends to include the same things, including suits, dress shirts and ties. However, general business attire also allows men and women to wear less formal coats, like sports coats or a structured jacket instead of a suit jacket. Women can wear business-like dresses and dressy separates. General business attire is the most common form of business attire requested on the job.

    Business Casual Attire

    • Business casual attire for men and women is more relaxed and includes items like chinos, khakis, knit polo shirts and sweaters. Women can also wear coordinating separates and dressy skirts. True business casual attire does not require men to wear ties, and nice, clean sneakers are usually considered to be fine, although dress shoes are still preferred.

    Contemporary Looks in Business Attire

    • In some businesses, especially creative fields like advertising and some computer companies, an even more relaxed form of business attire is becoming normal. Nice, clean sneakers with a pair of dark jeans topped by a dress shirt and tie or other dressy top combination are a common sight. If you're going to an interview, be sure to research the company.

    Business Attire for Women

    • The business attire rules are a bit different for women in some ways. When wearing a skirt in formal or general business attire, hosiery should be worn at all times. Closed toed and closed heeled shoes are expected, and skirts should never be too short or blouses too deep. Translucent shirts are also usually frowned upon.
