Where Do Pistachios Come From?

There are many different kinds of nuts cultivated throughout the world. High in protein and fiber, nuts are great snack foods and are a healthy alternative to chips and other salty snacks. There are hundreds of ways to use the various types of nuts. There are peanuts, cashews, almonds, pecans and, among many others, pistachios. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Origin

    • The pistachio nut, like many other kinds of nuts, grows on a tree native to the Middle East: the pistachio tree.

    History

    • The pistachio is an ancient nut, with fossil records dating it to 8,000 years ago. The pistachio is mentioned by name in the Old Testament of the Bible.

    Location

    • The pistachio thrives in warm, rocky soil and grows in many countries along the Mediterranean Sea, in the Middle East and in America. It has been introduced into some dry southwestern U.S. states, including Arizona and New Mexico, and California.

    Characteristics

    • The pistachio tree grows up to 25 feet high, and the nuts grow in groups or clusters on the end of its branches.

    Relatives

    • The pistachio is a relative of the mango, the cashew and the poison oak.
