History of Zip Lock Bags

Zip lock bags have come a long way since their conception in the 1960s. They are plastic food storage bags that seals in freshness with the zip-lock technology. Now, bags come in many different sizes and colors. There are zip lock bags just for snack or to freeze meat. There are even 'green' zip lock bags that are supposed to keep fruits and vegetables fresh longer. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Traditional Baggie

    • The Mobile Oil Company introduced the plastic baggie in 1958. The zip lock bag was supposed to be an improvement on this design.

    Ziploc by Glad

    • Glad Corporation introduced their ZipLoc bags in 1964. Glad offered consumers a valid improvement to the current technology of baggie food storage bags.

    Theories/Speculation

    • There is a conspiracy theory behind the creation of the zip lock bag. Regular plastic bags were hard to capture on camera at the time, so advertising them was difficult; that is why the new colorful zipper tops were added.

    Misconceptions

    • The makers of zip lock bags advertised to the public that they would keep food fresher than regular baggies. It has not been proven that zip lock bags work better than a regular closed baggie.

    Evolution

    • Glad has evolved its Ziploc brand name to include plastic containers. The containers claim the same seal security that the bags have for the past 40-plus years.
