What Is Moissanite Jewelry?
Moissanite (silicon carbide) is becoming a very popular lab-created jewel that rivals the beauty of natural diamond. It is used frequently in bridal jewelry and also makes stunning earrings and pendants. Although it shares some of the same qualities as diamond, the two have completely different chemical compositions. Does this Spark an idea?

History

In 1905, silicon carbide was named "moissanite" after a French scientist, Dr. Ferdinand Frederick Henri Moissan. Moissanite was lab created in the 1980's, and spectacular jewelry has been made from it ever since.
Characteristics
-
Moissanite has more fire and brilliance than diamond, as well as a hardness rating of 9.25 on the Mohs scale, making it second only to diamond.
-
Size
-
It is common to see moissanite measured by its diameter in millimeters as well as by the carat (weight). Moissanite weighs slightly less than diamond.

The color spectrum for moissanite is limited to white (clear), yellows and greens. White moissanite is not measured on the GIA scale, but is considered comparable to "near colorless." The clarity of moissanite is VS1 to VS2.
