Definition of a Trojan Horse Virus

When you surf the Internet, you always run the risk of picking up some kind of computer virus. More often than not the virus that will wind up infecting your PC is called a "Trojan Horse," or "Trojan" for short.

  1. Malware

    • Many trojans are forms of "malware," which is short for "malicious software." These programs are designed to damage your computer.

    Loss of Memory

    • Trojans will quickly use your spare RAM memory, resulting in slower computer performance and, eventually, shutdown.

    Computer Crashes

    • Other forms of trojan horses will immediately crash your computer and force you to wipe and reformat your hard drive.

    Advertising

    • Many forms of trojans are used simply to bypass ad blockers. If you are still getting pop-up advertisements after installing your ad blockers, you have a trojan.

    Harmless Trojans

    • While the majority of trojans will hurt your machine, some will do absolutely nothing except sit on your machine. Without running a virus scan, you would never know they were there.
