What Is a Toque?

Have you ever wondered what those funny looking hats that chefs wear are called? They're toques, and actually were once very popular hats worn by both men and women for a variety of different occasions. They didn't all look like chef's hats back during their days of popularity, but the style was basically the same. They were hats worn by scholars, men and women of the justice department, and a number of other people. Here are some fun facts about these interesting pieces of head gear. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • The toque is a narrow type of hat with either a very small brim or no brim at all. They vary in height, with some toques being close to the base of the skull, and others rising above it.

    Time Frame

    • Toques were popular from the 13th to the 16th century. They were mostly seen in France.

    Toque Blanche

    • The toque blanche is more commonly referred to as a chef's hat. These brimless hats are white, tall, round, pleated, and still worn today.

    Justice System

    • Toques were worn by French magistrates in their justice system. A special type, called a mortier, was worn by the head of the French parliament.

    Education

    • Students graduating from French universities were given a toque to wear during ceremonies. These are same as caps and tassels used in American universities.
