CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines are used in patients diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea. Sleep apnea patients suffer from airway obstruction during sleep due to the throat closing during sleep. This leads to pauses in breathing or shallow breathing throughout the night. The CPAP machine is worn over the nose or mouth and air is gently pushed through your airway to keep the throat from becoming blocked. These instructions will guide you through the process of wearing and taking care of your CPAP machine.

Clean and dry your face for proper sealing of the mask.

Place your CPAP machine on a level surface lower than the bed, either at the head of the bed or at the side.

Place headgear on head and mask over your nose or mouth and tighten until snug. Do not over-tighten as this could lead to bruising and soreness.

Attach the hose and swivel tube to the elbow connection on the mask, if necessary.

Turn your machine on. Airflow should be continuous. If there is any leaking around the mask you may need to tighten your headgear straps.

Wash your mask the following day with warm water and mild soap. Dry with a clean towel.

Tip

  • The mask may be uncomfortable at first so wear it for short periods at a time until you become used to it. Check your filter once a month and replace or wash if the filter is dirty. Wash the tubing weekly and hang to dry Wash tubing daily if you are sick with a cold.

Tip

  • Side effects include a dry or stuffy nose, skin irritation, and headaches. Stomach discomfort is not a normal side effect and your CPAP will need to be readjusted.
