The Pros & Cons of Halogen Light Bulbs

Halogen light bulbs offer some benefits, as well as notable drawbacks, when compared to standard incandescent light bulbs or compact fluorescent light bulbs. For many families, the benefits of halogen bulbs outweigh the drawbacks, but others may prefer other types of bulbs for ecological or economic reasons. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Halogen Bulbs Last Longer

    • Compared to standard incandescent bulbs, halogen lamps last much longer. However, a halogen bulb's lifespan is notably shorter than a compact fluorescent.

    Less Energy Expenditure

    • While not nearly as energy-efficient as a compact fluorescent bulb, halogen lamps use about 50 percent less energy than an equivalent, standard incandescent.

    No Mercury Waste

    • Some green-living people are concerned about the ecological and health risks associated with mercury vapor in compact fluorescent bulbs. Halogen bulbs do not pose this risk.

    More Expensive

    • A halogen bulb is about three times the price of a standard incandescent light bulb, but they are still generally cheaper than compact fluorescent bulbs.

    Hotter Burn

    • Halogen light bulbs burn much hotter than other types of bulb, making them a more significant fire hazard and burn risk.
