History

A coverlet, or coverlid, has been in use for hundreds of years. The practice of making the coverlet highly decorative became popular in the 19th century.

Definition

A coverlet is the top cover of a bed that is usually used more for decoration than for warmth. A quilted coverlet is a thin quilted covering that is generally quite ornate, but with a thin layer of batting.

Function

A quilted coverlet is used to cover the ordinary blankets and sheets of the bed, and is used for decorative purposes rather than for warmth or comfort. A quilted coverlet will have a very thin inner layer of batting so that it the coverlet itself is thin.

Types

Coverlets can come in many different types, but quilted coverlets are generally made from cotton materials.

A normal quilted coverlet for a twin sized bed will measure 70 x 92 inches. The size of a coverlet depends upon the mattress and the area of bed that needs covering.
