Chat rooms are a fact of life these days, facilitating regular contact with people from all corners of the world. They've become so prevalent that new linguistic terms and forms of social etiquette have developed to govern behavior within them. Chat rooms contain a number of benefits over other types of interaction, along with their share of drawbacks which should be considered before entering one.

Pro: Instant Communication

Chat rooms allow people to speak back and forth instantly without the use of a phone line. Correspondence which may have taken days via email can now be conducted in a manner of minutes.

Con: Timing and Crashes

While a chat room allows you to meet up with anybody, you still have to arrange for a specific time to meet. Furthermore, a computer crash or Internet glitch could disrupt the conversation, which is much less of a concern when talking via phone or email.

The anonymity and privacy permitted by chat rooms allows people to speak more freely and explore sides of themselves that they might not have a chance to otherwise.
