Zocor Side Effects on the Liver

Zocor (Simvastatin) is a prescribed to combat high cholesterol. Zocor works by blocking the enzyme that triggers cholesterol production in the body. Individuals taking Zocor may experience liver problems, possibly as a result of the medication, or possibly the result of something else. Doctors regularly check the liver enzyme levels of individuals taking Zocor to make sure that the medication is not adversely affecting the liver. According to emedtv.com, about 1 percent of those individuals taking Zocor experience one of the liver conditions described below.

  1. Cirrhosis

    • Cirrhosis is a condition that occurs when the liver becomes scarred. When the liver continues to be scarred over time, it will not be able to function properly.

    Jaundice

    • Jaundice may occur when the liver is damaged. Jaundice causes the skin and eyes to appear yellowish.

    Hepatitis

    • Hepatitis occurs when the liver become inflamed. This condition may cause an individual to feel fatigued and sickly.

    Hepatoma

    • This condition is a type of liver cancer. Liver cancers are potentially fatal and require aggressive treatment.

    Symptoms of Liver Problems

    • Oftentimes, individuals do not have any symptoms of liver problems. However, some individuals may experience stomach pain, vomiting, nausea and vomiting. Also, these individuals may notice that their urine is dark or brown-colored.
