Appearance of Skin Cancer

There are several types of cancer that afflict the skin. When they are identified and treated early, most outcomes are good. The signs and symptoms of skin cancer vary somewhat, but if you have any unusual skin growths, contact your doctor.

  1. Basal Cell Carcinoma

    • This is the most common type of skin cancer and the least serious. Often the result of excess sun, it appears as raised, pearly, firm nodules.

    Squamous Cell Carcinoma

    • Squamous cell carcinomas appear as crusty, scaly and ulcerated bumps. Unlike basal cell carcinoma, this form of skin cancer can metastasize. If it is treated quickly, prognosis is excellent.

    Melanoma

    • Melanoma is a serious and potentially fatal skin cancer. Look for pigmented lesions that are bigger than a pencil eraser. They will have an irregular shape and an asymmetrical border.

    Kaposi's Sarcoma

    • Kaposi's sarcoma is a tumor caused by the human herpes virus. Raised nodules or blotches will be red, purple, brown or black.

    Merkel Cell Carcinoma

    • Merkel cell carcinoma forms on or under the epidermis. Merkel cell carcinomas resemble a firm, painless cyst but cannot be moved.

    Cutaneous Lymphoma

    • Cutaneous lymphoma appears as rough, scaly and red patches that resemble eczema or psoriasis. This type of cancer can suppress the immune system and cause serious infections.
