Are Tanning Booths Harmful?
Many young men and women use tanning booths during the winter months so they can maintain a year-round tan. However, there is controversy surrounding the harmful effects of tanning booths. Medical practitioners and scientists claim that tanning booths can adversely affect a person's health. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Skin Cancer Risk
-
Because of the ultraviolet (UV) rays from tanning bulbs, UV rays can damage skin cells. When people tan for extended periods of time in tanning booths, they are at higher risk to develop melanoma (skin cancer).
Premature Aging
-
Tanning booths can cause premature aging in the skin. UV rays can damage the outer layer (dermis) of the skin and cause wrinkles and fine lines on the face and around the eyes.
-
Eye Damage
-
Tanning booths can also affect the eyes. People can experience eye damage such as conjunctivitis, retinal issues and corneal infections.
Sunburn
-
Tanning booths can cause sunburns. Sunburns can lead to skin peeling, inflammation, blisters and pain, and repeated sunburn damages skin cells.
Ultraviolet Rays Stronger Than Sunlight
-
The UV rays that are emitted in tanning booths are three times stronger than natural sunlight. Compared to tanning beds, natural sunlight provides Vitamin D and is less damaging than tanning booths.
