Diabetic Diet-Approved Foods

Diabetic diet-approved foods are part of the food pyramid and therefore come from all food groups. Diabetics need fiber, carbohydrates, lean protein, vegetables, dairy, fruits and fats for a healthy diet. What they do not need are foods high in sugar, saturated fat and empty-calorie foods.

  1. Carbohydrates

    • Diabetics need carbohydrates for energy. The best carbohydrates are foods high in fiber such as wheat bread, pasta, rice, cereal, starchy vegetables such as peas and potato, and lentils.

    Fruits

    • Fruits are good sources of fiber. Juices have little fiber, so choose fruit over juice.

    Milk

    • Milk and milk products are good sources of calcium. Choose fat-free or low-fat milk products.

    Non-Starchy Vegetables

    • Non-starchy vegetables includes broccoli, spinach, carrots, summer squash, cauliflower, green beans, cabbage and kale, to name a few.

    Protein

    • Protein is important for growth, maintenance and energy. Choose lean cuts of meat and plenty of fish.
