What it Takes to Become a Teacher
A teacher is much more than a classroom instructor. She is a friend, a role model and an inspiration to her students. It takes both preparation and character to become a teacher.
-
Education
-
A teacher must complete a four-year degree at an accredited college or university, as well as a traditional education track, post-baccalaureate education program or alternate route program.
Certification
-
A teacher must be certified to teach a specific age group or subject in his state. A certificate can be acquired from the state's Board of Education upon completion of the necessary educational and testing requirements.
-
Organization
-
A teacher must be able to approach lesson plans, classroom instruction and record-keeping in an organized fashion. He is responsible for maintaining order in his classroom and operating in an intentional way as a member of a faculty.
Commitment
-
A teacher must be able to commit herself to the good of her students, working to help each one succeed. Many students will need a variety of approaches, and some will need help outside of the classroom in order to master the material being presented.
Patience/Control
-
A teacher must be patient and able to control himself in the classroom. Classroom management must be accomplished without an expression of anger, and difficult students need to be dealt with by way of a non-emotional approach.
