Facts About Grass Seed

Whether your existing lawn has several bare patches or you are starting from scratch, planting your own grass seed is an economical way to achieve your dream of having a thick green lawn. Planting grass seed is not difficult, but before you begin, you need to understand a few things about grass seeds and what they need to grow. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types of Grass Seed

    • Grass seed is divided into warm season and cool season grasses. Plant cool season grass seeds in the early spring and fall. Plant warm season grass seeds in the spring or early summer.

    Warm Season Grass Seed

    • Warm season grass seeds typically grow during the hot months of summer and become dormant in winter. They are suited for areas where the summers are very hot and the winters are mild.

    Cool Season Grass Seed

    • Cool season grass seeds start growing in early spring, become dormant in the summer heat, and begin growing again in the fall. Cool season grass can tolerate cold winters and moderately hot summers, as long as you provide plenty of water.

    Growing Conditions

    • Is your planting site shady, dry, wet or sunny? Different grass seeds prefer different growing conditions, so make sure you choose a grass seed that is suited for your planting site.

    Planting Depth

    • Grass seeds need to be in contact with the soil to germinate. Seeds that are surrounded by soil have a better chance of successfully taking root than seeds just sitting on top. In general, plant grass seed at a depth of 1/8 to 1/4-inch.

    Watering

    • Grass seeds will not germinate if there is not enough moisture. Water at least once each day until the seeds germinates. Continue watering frequently for a few weeks afterward until the grass is established.
