Cures for Sinus Headaches

Sinus headaches affect millions of people all over the world. Sinus headaches can occur when the sinuses in the skull are irritated by allergies or bacteria. This irritation causes the sinuses to swell, and is likely to cause a headache. The pain will commonly manifest in the face, cheeks or behind the eyes, and can be severe. It is almost always paired with a stuffy nose and nasal discharge. There are several ways to treat a sinus headache.

  1. Compresses

    • Use cold and warm compresses. Put a warm compress over your sinuses for a few minutes. Replace with a cold compress for about one minute. Repeat this three times, six times per day.

    Moist Air

    • Inhale moist air. You can often ease sinus pressure and pain by humidifying dry air. Use a vaporizer or humidifier. You can even find relief by taking a hot shower or bath.

    Decongestants

    • Take a decongestant. Sinus pressure can usually be relieved with decongestants or antihistamines. Be sure to talk with your doctor first. If you do not have a sinus infection, taking decongestants can actually make your headache worse.

    Irrigation

    • Nasal irrigation can wash away pollens, dust, bacteria and other irritants. This can reduce mucous membrane inflammation. Irrigation will shrink the membranes and reduce headache symptoms.

    Alternative Medicine

    • Magnolia flowers can be used to relieve sinus pressure. You can also try other herbs such as mint and angelica.
