Symptoms of Bronchitis in Babies

Bronchitis results from a weakened respiratory system that creates inflammation of the breathing pathways. A viral infection in an infant can cause an acute case of bronchitis that requires immediate medical attention. Babies exposed to second-hand smoke also are at risk for developing acute bronchitis symptoms.

  1. Cough

    • Symptoms of acute bronchitis in babies include a constant cough that gets worse when the baby is sleeping or lying down.

    Mucus

    • Heavy mucus is produced during a bronchial attack, which babies cannot cough up. They tend to swallow the excess fluids and can choke if it is very heavy.

    Time

    • In bronchitis, a cough is persistent and becomes worse in about seven to 10 days. A bronchitis infection can last up to eight weeks.

    Rattle

    • The baby will develop a wheezing that manifests as a rattle in the chest.

    Fever

    • Babies with acute bronchitis develop a slight fever, and generally will act lethargic and less energetic than usual.

    Sleep

    • Sleep is typically interrupted regularly because of a cough or difficulty breathing while a baby has the infection.
