What Is a Tuberose?

The tuberose is a flowering, perennial plant that is widely regarded as one of the nicer smelling flowers. It is especially important in Indian culture. Even so, people from all around the world use the plant for various reasons. One of the most important of these is its use in making perfumes.

  1. Identification

    • The tuberose plant grows in long stalks that are clumped together. Thin, green leaves grow from the base of the plant and white flowers grow up the stalk.

    Blooming

    • The flowers of the tuberose plant bloom at night. In many cultures, it is called "night fragrance" or "scent of the night" for this reason.

    Uses

    • The oil from tuberose flowers is used to add a sweet, floral scent to perfumes. The flowers are also used in the making of leis and other ornamentation.

    India

    • In India, the tuberose has many functions. It is used in weddings, funerals and various traditional and religious ceremonies and rituals.

    Types

    • There is not just one type of tuberose. In all, there are 12 species of the plant.
