Now that you have your creative writing degree in hand, it's time to decide what to do with it. Writing jobs can be very competitive, and require accuracy, organization and the ability to meet deadlines consistently. Although it is rare to find "creative writer" as a job description, there are several opportunities to use your writing skills in the workplace.

  1. Author

    • Writing a book--whether its fiction, nonfiction or a collection of short stories or poetry--is the goal of many creative writers. Becoming an author requires hard work, both in writing the actual book and then finding an agent to work with you to market it.

    Screenwriter

    • Screenwriters not only write scripts for television and movies, but also video games, documentaries and even training videos.

    Journalist

    • Journalists write for magazines, newspapers, television and radio. They conduct background research and interview members of their community to report on breaking news, special events or notable people.

    Editor

    • Editors work for book publishers, newspapers and magazines. At the senior level, they decide whether or not a book or article is suitable for publication. Earlier in their career they are responsible for tasks such as fact-checking, copyediting or writing headlines.

    Copywriter

    • Copywriters work in the advertising industry, writing brochures, catalogs and scripts for television or radio commercials to persuade consumers to buy a certain product.
