What Is a Football Visor Used For?

Football is a high-intensity sport characterized by a lot of contact. The body is pretty much padded from head to toe with equipment. The head actually gets a little bit more protection then the rest of the body with the aid or a helmet. One feature that a lot of football players use is the addition of visors.

  1. Significance

    • The head and face are vulnerable spots while playing football. If they are not protected properly, traumatic injuries can ensue.

    Eyes

    • Often, during the course of a game, fingers may slip in through the face mask and poke a player in the eyes. In this situation, the visor is used to prevent this from happening.

    Sun

    • Visors are either made clear or they are tinted. The tinted versions not only aid in protection, but they also keep the sun and bright lights out of player's eyes.

    Vision

    • Some football players have vision problems and off the field they wear glasses or contacts. Some visors are specially designed with the same prescriptions as their glasses.

    Reading

    • Many times in football, defenders can read the eyes of a receiver or running back and predict where the play is going to go. The tinted visors make this hard to do.
