Is Human Cough Medicine Safe for Dogs?

Some over-the-counter cough medicines made for people will also work for dogs. Before you give any to your coughing dog, however, weigh your dog first, as the dosage will depend on how much your dog weighs. You may also find it much easier dosing your dog with a syringe or pipette rather than a spoon.

Dextromethorpan

According to "Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Encyclopedia," cough medicine containing dextromethorpan will work for dogs. It's found in brand names Robitussin and Benylin Expectorant (see Resources).

Guaifenesin

This decongestant is often included with cough medicines containing dextromethorpan. It is safe for dogs.

Dosage

The dosage is 1 tsp. for every 20 lbs. of weight, or between 0.5 and 1 ml for every pound of weight. This is given every six hours.

Warning

Make sure the cough medicine does not contain the painkillers aspirin or acetaminophen, because they can get a dog very sick. If the dog vomits, trembles or has irregular heart rate after taking the medicine, call the vet.

When to Call the Vet

According to "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats," most canine coughs will go away in 24 hours (see Resources). But if it doesn't, it could be a sign of bronchitis or another problem that needs vet attention.
