Getting Started
-
Know the size and comfort level of the mattress you plan to purchase. Consider the amount of space available and decide on the best dimensions for the space, as well as your comfort.
Twins and Dorms
-
The smallest and most compact mattress size is the twin, made to fit one person comfortably. Twin mattresses are 39 inches wide and 75 inches long and fit into any size room. The twin bed category also includes the extra long twin, which is for people who are too tall for the standard twin-sized mattress. It is slightly narrower, at 36 inches, but provides extra leg room because it is 80 inches long.

The Double
-
The double, or full-sized, mattress is an alternative to the larger queen- or king-sized beds. Measuring 54 inches wide and 75 inches long, the double bed can comfortably fit two people or give one person more room to move around than the twin mattress.
Queen of the Bedroom
-
The first in the larger sized mattresses is the queen. Whether you need a little more room for two people or a lot more room for one person to move around, the queen size might be the right fit for you. It measures 60 inches wide and 80 inches long.
King-Sized
-
The largest bed size available is the king. Just like the twin, the king bed comes in two sizes. The standard (and most common) king bed is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. Much wider than the queen, and almost double the width of the twin, the king bed can comfortably fit up to three people at once. The second size option, which is usually called the California king bed, is a little smaller, at 72 inches wide, but gives the sleeper more leg room at 84 inches long. Either way, the king bed lives up to its name in size and comfort.
