Car Window Tint Laws
Federal law currently does not mandate tinting requirements on automobiles; however, each state has its own separate requirements on issues ranging from windshield tint to certification of window tint by installers and manufacturers.
-
Windshield
-
Certain states, like Arkansas, require that window tinting on windshields only be allowed on the top five inches, known as the AS-1 line, of the windshield.
Windows
-
States require a certain percentage of visible light transmission, or VLT, allowable for tinting on car windows. The percentage rate varies from state to state; for example, Colorado's percentage is 27% for all windows on the side and back of the vehicle.
-
Left & Right Mirrors
-
Certain states also require that vehicles have left and right navigational mirrors if their windows are tinted. Under Kansas law, side mirrors are required in the instance that the back window has any percentage of window tint.
Certificates
-
Some states also require that installers or manufacturers include certification of legal compliance with the VLT requirement on their product. For example, Oklahoma law mandates that all manufacturers certify their tint before selling to buyers.
Stickers
-
Other states, like Arkansas again, require a sticker on the actual vehicle expressing that the tinting installed is in compliance with the law. Some states also mandate where the sticker is placed on the vehicle.
