About Art Historian Careers

Art history is the study of the history and stylistic history of art, including paintings, sculptures, architecture, furniture design and ceramics. It's usually studied in a collegiate setting by art history majors and art enthusiasts. Art history is one of those majors often leads to teaching, but art historians work in a wide variety of careers.

  1. Teaching

    • Art historians with a Ph.D. can teach at the collegiate level. Teaching doesn't just include standing in front of a classroom. Art history professors still have to publish articles. Some courses require traveling and studying abroad.

    Museum Curator

    • Most art history majors wish to become art curators for museums, which are content specialists responsible for specific collections and exhibits. They are in charge of all objects in an exhibit.

    Art Librarian

    • Art librarians organize and provide access to visual art information, which can include art, film, design or photography. They can work in universities and museums as well as art libraries.

    Art Gallery Management

    • Art historians are also frequently employed to manage art galleries, which includes helping promote and sell the artists' work.

    Preservation and Conservation

    • Art conservators strive to keep pieces of art in their original states. Preservation takes this one step further and works to restore the piece.

    Art Law

    • Art lawyers can represent either artists or collectors to assist them in buying and selling art, appraising art, writing art contracts, insuring art and brokering art.
