What Is on a Diabetic Diet?
You may think that a diabetic has to live on salads and bland foods. That's not true. A diabetic can eat almost anything, but it's how much that is the issue. Carbohydrates turn to sugar, so the diabetic must count carbohydrates. Saturated fat can lead to cardiovascular complications, so a diabetic must watch fat intake. Weight control is important too, so a diabetic must count calories.

Carbohydrates
-
Because 100 percent of carbohydrates turn to sugar for energy, the diabetic must count carbohydrates. A qualified dietitian determines how many carbohydrates you should have a day.
Protein
-
Because protein is essential for body maintenance, a diabetic should eat lean meats and plenty of fish. Limit protein to 6 oz. a day.
-
Vegetables and Fruit
-
Vegetables and fruit contain needed minerals and vitamins, so a diabetic should eat at least three servings per day. A serving is a small fruit or 1/2 cup of vegetables.
Dairy
-
Dairy supplies calcium. A diabetic needs to choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Try to include at least two servings of dairy a day.
Fats
-
Saturated fat should be limited to no more than 1 gram per serving or a total of 3 grams of fat per serving.
