What Is the History of Memphis Guitars?
Over the years many guitar companies have come and gone. As new companies start up, old companies go out of business. Some of the items made by these now-defunct companies are now becoming collector's items as older players look to play on the instruments they played when they were kids. One company that is receiving new-found attention is the Memphis guitar company.

Memphis guitars were produced from the 1970s to the middle of the 1980s and were largely based off the Gibson Les Paul and SG model of guitar.
Parent Company

Yamaha Instruments owned Memphis guitars while it was still making instruments.

Purpose

Memphis guitars began when the Yamaha corporation saw a huge demand for Gibson-style guitars and decided to offer its own knock-off version at a much lower price than an authentic Gibson.
Lawsuit

The Gibson Guitar Company sued Memphis guitars in the mid 1980s to cease production as it felt Memphis had stolen its guitar design.
Fun Fact

Though many companies, such as Memphis, have had some success manufacturing less-expensive Gibson types guitars, they often go out of business quickly, while Gibson has remained at the top of the guitar world for more than 100 years.
