What Is a Murphy Bed?

Providing beds for guests can be challenging in small homes and apartments, and the Murphy bed is one traditional solution for this problem. Without taking up an entire room, a Murphy bed still can provide a traditional mattress bed for overnight guests, and is a quick and easy solution, as opposed to air mattresses, cots or sleeping bags. So, what exactly is a Murphy bed?

  1. What Is a Murphy Bed?

    • A Murphy bed is a foldaway bed that typically folds up against a wall on the head end. With no headboard, footboard and box spring, a Murphy bed folds flat up against a wall and leaves valuable living space open.

    • William Murphy patented the Murphy bed in 1916.

    The Mattress

    • The mattress of a Murphy bed is attached at all four corners of the frame with bolts, and there are no box springs. Rather, the mattress sits on wire mesh.

    Closet Murphy Beds

    • Some Murphy beds are located in small built-in closets and concealed behind closet doors.

    Panel Murphy Beds

    • Other Murphy beds have a wooden panel on the bottom, designed to disguise the bottom of the bed as part of a wall, until it is folded down and revealed as a bed.
