What Are the Different Types of Rain Gutters?

Rain gutters keep water from accumulating on a building's roof. The water is collected in the gutter and routed down to the ground through the downspout. Heavy rains can overflow a rain gutter if the downspout is not wide enough to keep up with the flow.

Aluminum

The most common type of rain gutter is aluminum. Aluminum costs less than other metals and is more durable than wood. Aluminum can easily be bent if struck by falling tree branches or ladders.

Steel

The most durable type of rain gutters are made from steel. They are vulnerable to rust unless you use stainless steel.

Vinyl

Vinyl rain gutters are sturdy, inexpensive and will never rust. They need to be replaced periodically because ultraviolet rays from the sun can break the vinyl down.

Integral

Some buildings have an integral rain gutter as part of their roof design. A channel is placed between the fascia and roof rafters to funnel the water into a downspout.

Wood

Wood rain gutters are not used on many homes today because there are so many longer-lasting alternatives. They are vulnerable to damage from water and termites.
