About Thyroid Problems in Dogs

The thyroid gland is essential to numerous biological functions, but its biggest role is in metabolic regulation. Thyroid problems in dogs may be inherited or caused by other medical conditions, and diagnosis can be difficult in some cases. Early diagnosis and treatment of thyroid problems in dogs is essential to prevent severe complications, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Types

Depending on whether too much or too little thyroid hormone is produced, thyroid problems in dogs are classified as either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

Significance

Hypothyroidism is common in middle-aged dogs, especially large breeds such as golden retrievers, Irish setters, and Doberman pinschers. Hyperthyroidism in dogs is rare.

Identification

Symptoms of thyroid problems include weight gain, lethargy, skin problems, diarrhea or constipation, aggression, infertility, slow heart rate, anemia, high cholesterol levels, intolerance to cold or heat, depression, hyperactivity and excessive shedding.

Causes

Hypothyroidism, the most common thyroid problem in dogs, is caused by impaired secretion or production of the thyroid hormone, often resulting from destruction of the gland by the dog's immune system.

Treatment

Treatment of hypothyroidism in dogs includes medication to replace the hormone deficiency, while hyperthyroidism is treated with surgery or with Tapazol, a drug that inhibits hormone production.
