Symptoms of a Transmission Problem

The transmission is an important part of the car and can also be a costly one to repair. Before a transmission completely fails, it will give you any warning signs that there's a problem. By taking care of issues as they become known, you can save yourself thousands of dollars by repairing the transmission instead of replacing it.

  1. Leaking Fluid

    • Leaking transmission fluid means there is a problem and should be taken to a mechanic for an inspection. Transmission fluid is red.

    Low Transmission Fluid

    • If transmission fluid consistently needs to be added, but there is no sign of a leak, the transmission is burning fluid as a result of overheating.

    Transmission Slips

    • When shifting, the transmission does not shift quickly and firmly like it should. Instead, the car shifts slowly and the engine revs for a period of time before shifting into the next gear.

    Fluid Contains Metal

    • Any amount of metal shavings means internal parts are grinding and the transmission should be serviced immediately.

    Shifts Hard

    • The car shifts hard, giving the car a jerking motion when it shifts.
