About Lower Abdominal Pain During Pregnancy

Many women experience lower abdominal pain at some point during pregnancy, and it is usually not a sign of a serious complication. Many factors can cause lower abdominal pain during pregnancy.

  1. Implantation

    • Mild cramping in the first trimester is usually caused by implantation, when the blastocyst harmlessly settles into the lining of the uterus.

    Ectopic Pregnancy

    • An ectopic pregnancy---when a blastocyst implants outside the uterus---is a life-threatening condition usually associated with severe cramping, bleeding and spotting.

    Miscarriage

    • A pregnancy loss before 20 weeks usually begins with spotting or bleeding, and is usually followed by persistent lower abdominal pain, which may radiate to the back or legs.

    Round Ligament Pain

    • Persistent, mild pain in the lower left side of the abdomen, especially in the second half of pregnancy, is usually benign aching of the round ligament as the uterus grows.

    Contractions

    • Later in pregnancy, most women experience noticeable Braxton-Hicks (practice) contractions, which may be uncomfortable.

    Labor

    • If the pain becomes regular and more intense, and is not relieved by changing positions, it may be a sign of labor.
