History of the Apple iPod Touch
The iPod Touch is a combination personal digital assistant and portable media player from Apple Inc. A slim, rectangular electronic device with multi-touch technology, it allows users to perform tasks by touching the screen with their fingers in order to access the graphical user interface and manipulate various functions.

Predecessors

The release of the iPod touch followed all other Apple Inc. first-generation portable media products, including the iPod classic, iPod mini, iPod nano, iPod shuffle and iPhone.
iPhone Connection

With a similar multi-touch interface yet fewer communication applications and features, the iPod touch was designed as an alternative to the iPhone that had released about two months before it.

The first-generation iPod touch was introduced on September 5, 2007, during the presentation The Beat Goes On, held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.

The second-generation iPod touch was launched on September 9, 2008, at the Let's Rock event presented at Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, California.
Model Two Changes

The second version of iPod touch includes an external volume control, a built-in speaker, Nike+iPod capability, updated firmware and a thinner case that more closely resembles that of an iPhone--all at a lower price.
