Kinds of Orchids

Orchids are a large and a diverse group of plants. They bloom in various colors and forms. Orchids can grow in a range of habitats from full sun to shade and they'll grow on trees, rocks or on the ground. In bloom, orchids are beautiful, delicate and decorative plants. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cymbidium Orchids

    • Cymbidium orchards are the best known and the most commonly grown orchids. They are easy to grow and have large flowers. The will grow and thrive almost anywhere. Cymbidiums orchids originated in the Orient and have been grown there since 500 B.C. There are many varieties of cymbidium orchards and their blooms will vary in color and size.

    Miniature Orchids

    • Miniature orchids will grow in small pots and reach a height of only 3 inches. They also will produce colorful blooms. The Epidendrum Porpax grows and blooms quickly with striking flowers. The Pleurothallis Caligularis is a beautiful miniature orchid with a half-inch red flower with a white trim.

    Phalaenopsis Orchids

    • The Phalaneopsis orchid got its name from Phalaena, which roughly translates into "a group of moths." That is exactly what its flowers look like--moths in flight. They flowers annually and the blooms will last for three to four months inside a home. The blooms can be white, yellow or pink.

    Vanda Orchids

    • Vanda orchids are tropical orchids that are easy to grow in the right climate. They are truly beautiful flowers and come in bright bold colors such as red, orange, burgundy, green, yellow and white. The Blue Vanda is the pride of many orchid growers.

    Rare Orchids

    • Rare orchids can be found everywhere in the world and they can also be grown anywhere. The Tiger orchid is known as the world's largest orchid, growing up to 15 feet. It blooms only once every two to five years in colors of brown, yellow and cream. The Ghost Orchid is called so because its flowers can be seen growing in a certain spot but not the plant. The Ghost Orchid has been the subject of several books.

    Zygopetalum Orchids

    • Zygopetalum orchids often known and grown for their strong scent. They are easy to grow and will flower all year round. Their leaves are leathery and will flower in colors of white, bright green, burgundy and purple.

    Orchid Bouquets

    • Orchid make beautiful bouquets and are often used at wedding and other special occasions. Their exotic appeal, beauty and pleasant aroma are all part of an orchid's allure.
