UFC Fighting Rules

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) rules were established by the New Jersey Athletic Control Board. Known as the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, UFC fighting rules are recognized by Nevada, Louisiana, California and other states. These rules are used beyond the UFC, and have become the de facto regulations for all mixed martial arts contests in North America.

  1. Rounds

    • UFC rules define that each round of a contest lasts for five minutes. Each title match has five rounds, while non-title matches only have three. One minute of rest is provided between the rounds.

    Weight Class

    • The rules for the UFC define five basic weight classes, starting at 145 lbs. and going up to 265 lbs: Lightweight, Welterweight, Middleweight, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight. There are provisions for fighters under and over these requirements.

    The Ring

    • Each UFC fight takes place in a cage called "The Octagon." The cage is an eight-sided structure made of metal chain-link coated with black vinyl. The diameter is 32 feet with a height of 5 ½ feet, and features two entrances directly across from each other. It is placed on a four-foot platform.

    Dress

    • Each fighter in the UFC must wear shorts. No shoes, shirts, long pants or gis are allowed. The only other material of clothing allowed are gloves. These include one inch of padding on the knuckle to prevent serious injury to the hands.

    Matches

    • A match is decided in the UFC by fairly standard fight conclusions. A submission is when a fighter taps out or verbally surrenders. A knockout occurs when a fighter cannot continue after a blow. A technical knockout is when the fight is stopped by the referee, cornerman or doctor.
