- Starting out as a DJ, you're going to be low on the totem pole. You'll start out doing overnights or weekends. It's not glamorous to be on the air at 1 in the morning, but it's a reality. To get off that shift, show that you are growing and learning and willing to try new things. Then you'll be bumped up to weekends, where you'll continue to grow and turn into a real personality on the air.
- When you start out in the business you need to learn everything you can. Talk to everyone there and find out everything you can about radio as a business and about production. This shows that you're ready and willing to learn and continue in the business.
- When you're there on the weekends, after your on-air shift, spend time in the production studios with the software and try it for yourself. Figure out how to use the equipment, record yourself, play it back, listen to yourself frequently and see how you sound and if there's anything you need to change.
- Let's be honest, jobs in radio now are slim to none. Automation is what a lot of stations are going to, so you need to do everything possible to show that you're ready and willing to work your way up. If you do this, the reward will be that you continue to grow and maybe work your way up to a full-time position. Even if you don't, you can keep your foot in the door and show them that you have what it takes and will continue to work on it.
- Success in radio is being able to entertain the audience. You are keeping them company during their workday or on their weekends. They are listening to you and enjoying the music. Remember that, and the success will be there.
