What Are the Different Types of Acne?

Acne is a chronic skin condition that causes many different kinds of breakouts. The types of acne lesions include blackheads, whiteheads, pustules, nodules and cysts. The skin eruptions appear on many parts of the body--usually those with many oil glands, such as the face, neck, chest, back and upper arms. Acne forms as the result of hormonal changes, oily skin, dead skin cells, blocked pores and bacteria.

  1. Blackheads

    • With a blackhead, the pore is only partially blocked. This allows some of the oil and debris in the pores to drain out.

    Whiteheads

    • With whiteheads, the pores are entirely clogged. The trapped dead skin cells and oil give a white appearance.

    Pustules

    • Pustules look like red circles with white centers. They are similar to whiteheads and form when a clogged pore also has bacteria. The bacteria cause the skin to become inflamed.

    Nodules

    • Nodules are large and painful bumps under the skin which are caused by bacteria. The bacteria cause infection and inflammation deep within the pores.

    Cysts

    • Cysts are nodules that are filled with pus. Cystic acne is inflamed, painful and leaves scars.
