What Equipment Is Needed to Play Lacrosse?

Lacrosse may be the oldest team sport in North America, dating back to Native American tribes in the 1100s. The right lacrosse equipment can improve your performance in this high-speed game of ball control and strategy.

  1. Stick

    • Lacrosse sticks are made from wood or aluminum and come in a variety of lengths. The proper length for a player depends on the position they play. Attackers use the shortest sticks, followed by midfielders and goalies. Defenders prefer a long stick to give them plenty of reach.

    Pocket

    • The pocket of a lacrosse stick can change its performance. Looser pockets allow for better ball control, but do not have the shooting power and accuracy of a tighter, shallow pocket.

    Helmet

    • A good lacrosse helmet should have a sturdy wire cage to protect the face. Goalies use an extra throat protector that attaches to the bottom of the helmet.

    Ball

    • Lacrosse balls weigh between 5 and 5 1/4 ounces and are 7 3/4 to 8 inches around. They are either orange or white.

    Goal

    • Regulation lacrosse goals are 7 feet deep and 6-by-6 feet across.
