Pancreatic Insufficiency Symptoms in Dogs

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) can occur in dogs of any breed, but is most common in German shepherds. It occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes, resulting in poor digestion (maldigestion) and poor absorption of vital nutrients (malabsorption). Because your dog cannot digest and absorb these nutrients, they are simply passed through her gastrointestinal tract and out through her feces. Without treatment, this process could literally starve your dog. Unfortunately, researchers estimate that before your dog even becomes symptomatic, 90 percent of her pancreas will already be damaged.
