When Were Binoculars Invented?

Binoculars are extremely common and well known. However, it was just a few hundred years ago when the entire concept was brand new and exciting. Many people worked on telescope and binocular inventions during that period.

  1. Did Galileo Invent the Binoculars?

    • Galileo did not invent the binoculars, despite his early work with telescopes. He did, however, work with combining concave and convex lenses to magnify distant images.

    Jan Lippershey

    • Jan Lippershey is the man credited with developing the first binoculars. In December of 1608, he finished his first binocular instrument, just two months after his patent application for the telescope.

    • J.P. Lemiere invented the first binocular telescope in 1825.

    Modern Prism Binocular

    • The modern prism binocular was invented in 1854 by Ignatio Porro of Italy.

    Binoculars Today

    • Binoculars have many different applications. They can be combined with cameras to produce excellent photography and they are used at sporting games and other events for a better view. Their use in the military in World War II helped pave the way for vast improvements in binocular capabilities.
