An exotic car of any age is usually a custom-built, one-of-a-kind, high-performance vehicle that comes either as a luxury sedan, roadster, coupe or sports tourer. It has always existed but was reborn from the rubble of World War II in Italy and Germany with marathon races and attention to craftsmanship.

    • A 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB is considered exotic.

      The birth of the exotic car can be traced to the early 20th century foundings of Bentley, Bugatti, Duesenberg, Maserati, Aston Martin, and later Ferrari and Lamborghini. Most of these cars are produced in limited quantities and hand built without the benefit of an assembly line.

      Exotic-car engineering and design usually end up in mass-produced cars, such as all-wheel-drive, all-wheel disc brakes, fuel injection and independent suspension.

      Postwar Europe is the region largely responsible for producing the modern exotic car, with road races Mille Miglia, Targa Florio and Le Mans setting the stage to test sports-car engineering and styling.

      Roadsters are the most popular today, with any Ferrari, Maserati or Lamborghini falling into this category, while Bentley offers a sports-car styling in addition to luxury sedans.

      Prewar Duesenbergs and some Mercedes-Benz, among other cars, are considered exotic, but Italian builders from the World War II era to present, such as Ferrari, epitomize the label.

      The 2009 Bentley Continental GTC is 189.1 inches long and rides on a 108.1-inch wheelbase, powered by a 6-liter, V-12 engine generating 552 horsepower.
