Symptoms of Thrush During Pregnancy

Thrush infections, more commonly known as yeast infections, are caused by the microscopic fungus candida albicans, which normally abides in the human intestinal tract and in the vaginal area of approximately 1/3 of all women. The fungus only becomes problematic if its growth outnumbers the growth of competing microorganisms. During pregnancy, the vagina is rich with glycogen, a sugar that promotes the growth of candida albicans, so thrush infections are quite common.

Itching

One of the most common signs of a thrush infection is extremely severe itching. However, scratching will only make the infection worse.

Burning

A thrush infection will cause a burning sensation in the vagina and surrounding areas. The burning can range from mild to unbearably severe.

Vaginal Discharge

Thin, milky vaginal discharge is normal during pregnancy. However, if the discharge is white, thick, has a cottage cheese-like appearance and smells of yeast, you may have a thrush infection.

Soreness and Pain

Vaginal tissues are very delicate. A thrush infection is extremely irritating, and will cause swelling, redness and soreness.

Pain

As a result of the irritation, some women may find it difficult to urinate or engage in sexual intercourse. In severe cases, even sitting or walking can cause pain.
