Behavior Symptoms of Cats With Worms

A severe case of worms in your cat can lead to serious health problems later, or in some cases, even death. So learn the important signs of worms in your cat.

    1. Stool

      • Cats who are infected with worms often have stool problems. Worms can result in a watery, diarrhea type stool or a dark, tarry stool. Both types can make your cat very uncomfortable. If you think your cat has worms, try to look at your cat's stool moments after they go. Fresh stool samples of cats with worms will often have live worms in them.

      Vomiting

      • Because of the disruption in the digestive system, cats with worms often begin vomiting as the worms get worse. If your cat starts vomiting frequently, take it to the vet. Vomiting can be a sign of an extreme amount of worms in your cat's digestive tract and can be a danger to your cat's health.

      Weight Loss

      • Cats who have had worms for awhile will often experience weight loss, caused by the amount of food the worms are eating. If a large number of worms exist in your cat's intestines, they may keep your cat from getting the nutrients it needs.

      No Symptoms

      • Be aware that symptoms of worms in cats can be inconclusive. Not all cats show all symptoms, or any at all. If you suspect your cat may have worms, take it to the veterinarian for testing on a stool sample.

      Worms in Kittens

      • Signs of worms in kittens are similar to those in cats but slightly different. Kittens, like cats, can experience diarrhea. However, kittens also often show signs of slow weight gain and bloating or pot belly effect, an obvious distention of the belly.
