One of the great things about nursing careers is the large number of specialties that nurses can choose to target in their careers. Here are just a few examples of the most common types of nursing specialties that nurses may be interested in.

  1. Labor and Delivery

    • Many nurses dream of working labor and delivery to care for women who are either in labor or who have recently given birth. Labor and delivery nursing can be a highly emotional and fulfilling career; usually you will need a minimum credential of Registered Nurse.

    Medical-Surgical Nursing

    • Nurses working in medical-surgical nursing care for patients who are awaiting surgery or who have recently had surgery, and they also may provide assistance in the operating room during surgical procedures.

    Renal Nursing

    • Renal nurses specialize in caring for patients who have kidney disorders and may assist in caring for patients receiving kidney dialysis.

    Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing

    • Psychiatric and mental health nurses care for patients with serious psychiatric disorders; they may work at institutions serving these patients.
