What Safety Precautions Can Be Taken Before a Tornado Hits?

Tornadoes are one of the most frightening weather phenomena, because they often occur with little warning and can leave a deadly path of destruction in their wake. Tornadoes are more common in the United States then anywhere else on Earth. They are especially common in the so-called tornado alley, an area of the Great Plains that includes parts of Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas. Tornadoes can pack wind speeds of more than 300 miles per hour, although most are weaker. However, a tornado of any strength can cause injury and destruction, so it's best to be prepared. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. At Home

    • The most important thing to do if a tornado is approaching your home is to take shelter. If you live in a residential home, go to the basement of the center-most room or closet. Try to take cover under sturdy furniture or cover yourself with a mattress or pillows.

    In Your Car

    • If you find yourself driving as a tornado approaches, do not try and outrun it. It is best to take cover by laying flat in a low-lying area. Never try to hide under a bridge.

    In a Mobile Home

    • Always leave a mobile home if a tornado is approaching. If time allows, leave the mobile home for a safer structure or shelter, such as a school or municipal building. If there isn't time, find a low-laying area and lay flat on the ground.

    Be Prepared

    • One of the best things you can do before a tornado hits is to be prepared. Make sure the entire family knows what to do in the event of a tornado, and have an annual practice drill.

    Emergency Kit

    • If possible, keep an emergency kit in the location where you would take shelter from a tornado. Items to include in the kit are a flashlight and batteries, water, a radio and important phone numbers and some cash.
