Your doctor may prescribe amoxicillin for you or your child due to illnesses such as infections of the ear or urinary tract, stomach ulcers and sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea. Side effects include digestive problems, fungal growth and organ damage. Consider this information from drugs.com and the Mayo Clinic about the side effects of the antibiotic amoxicillin.

    Diarrhea

  1. Experiencing diarrhea while you take amoxicillin is the most common side effect, although if your diarrhea is bloody, urgent medical care is needed.
  2. Yeast Infection

  3. Amoxicillin may kill off the good bacteria in your system that keep fungi and yeast growth low, resulting in vaginal yeast infections in girls and women.
  4. Black Tongue

  5. You may get a black, hairy looking tongue while taking amoxicillin as a result of fungal growth in your mouth.
  6. Skin Rashes

  7. Amoxicillin may cause you to get a skin rash that can include redness, swelling and the formation of pus-filled lesions.
  8. Tooth Discoloration

  9. If your child is taking amoxicillin, discoloration of the teeth is a common side effect that can be resolved by a dental cleaning.
  10. Liver Damage

  11. You may develop drug-induced liver damage from taking amoxicillin, with symptoms such as jaundice, nausea or vomiting, dark urine and elevated liver function tests.
  12. Decreased Contraceptive Effectiveness

  13. If you are taking oral contraceptives, amoxicillin can reduce their effectiveness, and you could get pregnant.
