Causes of Cold Sores

Cold sores, also known as oral herpes, can be painful and annoying, but if you know the causes of the virus that causes cold sores, they can be avoided. Read on to discover the hows and whys of cold sores.

  1. Herpes Simplex Virus

    • Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, or oral herpes. This virus causes cold sores around the mouth and face, and most people with the virus will have outbreaks several times a year.

    Types of Herpes Simplex Virus

    • There are two types of herpes simplex virus. Type I is usually the cause of cold sores; however, Type II can also cause oral herpes.

    How The Virus Is Spread

    • The herpes simplex virus spreads through direct contact, like kissing. An individual who has oral herpes can spread the virus at any time, but the virus is most contagious when open sores are present.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms can range from fever and bleeding gums to a several cold sores forming around the mouth. Once a blister begins to form, the area may redden and several blisters may appear. Tenderness and mild pain are common in the affected area.

    Treatment

    • There is no vaccine or cure for the herpes simplex virus. Medication can be prescribed in severe cases. Pain can be alleviated by using cold compresses.

    Prevention

    • Individuals with oral herpes should wash their hands often, avoid facial contact, and not share drinks or utensils while experiencing an outbreak.
