  1. The SR-22 is a document required by some states' departments of insurance. It provides evidence of the required amounts of coverage.
  2. When Do You Need SR-22 Insurance?

  3. Some state departments of insurance may require SR-22 coverage for certain violations including DWI, DUI, driving with a suspended license or being stopped without proof of insurance.
  4. Filing an SR-22

  5. Most insurance companies who sell SR-22 insurance provide you with the proper documentation to file an SR-22. Contact your state department of insurance for any state specific requirements.
  6. What Happens If I Don't File an SR-22?

  7. If you don't file an SR-22 after being required to do so by law, you will not be able to legally drive. If you cancel SR-22 coverage once obtained, your insurance carrier is required by law to notify your state department of insurance, and your driver's license may be suspended or revoked.
  8. How Long Does the SR-22 Remain Active?

  9. Your state department of insurance will notify you and let you know how long you are required to carry SR-22 insurance. After you are notified you are no longer required to carry this coverage, contact your insurance agent, who will file an SR-26 to remove the coverage.
