Hair Stylist Qualifications

Some people looking for a change in their current career have found their passion in styling hair. There are great opportunities for hair stylist with the right qualifications. A person will need to know what those qualifications are and how to obtain them in order to secure a job as a hair stylist.

  1. Education

    • Other than a high school diploma or GED, no other formal education is required for all hair stylist positions. However, many companies look for individuals with some training or an associate's degree in cosmetology.

    Experience

    • Experience can be a substitute for formal training. Some high-end salons prefer that a stylist receives training and has a couple of years experience before coming to work for them.

    Licensure

    • Every stylist, except for shampooers, is required to obtain a state license to do hair. Licensure is obtained after certain criteria are met and exams are passed at the State Board.

    Interpersonal Skills

    • Stylists provide services to customers, so it is important that they have some "people" skills. Some cosmetology schools even offer courses in interpersonal skills because they feel it is so important to what stylist do.

    Knowledge of Fashion Trends

    • Fashion is an intricate part in hair styling. The stylist needs to know and stay up on current trends to offer the best services to clients.
