About Wedding Planning Courses

Wedding planners need industry-specific knowledge to be competitive in their field. Since there are no standard education requirements to become a wedding planner, there are many different types of wedding planning courses available. Courses vary in length and level of award, with some awarding certification and others leading to degrees. A good program should provide knowledge about each step of the wedding planning process as well as business skills.

    • College and universities may offer broader degree programs, such as a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management with an emphasis on Event Planning. These programs may incorporate liberal arts and business courses.

    Certificate and Online Programs

    • Online programs and programs through community colleges tend to focus more specifically on the skills needed for wedding planning, and often culminate in a certificate of achievement.

    Certification Programs

    • Professional organization offer certification to individuals who complete their programs. These programs focus solely on skills used in the wedding planning process (see Resources).

    Subjects Covered

    • Courses begin covering engagements, wedding announcement and invitations, and then move on to planning the wedding. Planning topics include selecting a venue, hiring caterers and entertainment, choosing flowers, bridal wear and themes, designing color schemes and planning the ceremony.
